50 Hikes in Orange County

In addition to the Orange County dog friendly hikes we tabbed in Jerry Schad’s Afoot and Afield in Orange County, there are 7 hikes we found in Karen Klein’s 50 Hikes in Orange County. Coastal Hikes

01. San Gabriel River to Turtle Overlook. 3 to 4.5 miles. Out and back. Level. Best year round. Easy.

03. Bayview Trail. 3 miles. Out and back, plus a short loop. 100’ elevation gain. Best year round. Easy.

12. Pecten Reef Loop. 1.4 miles. Loop. 60’ elevation gain. Best year round. Easy.

Foothill Hikes

25. Coyote Canyon Loop. 4.5 miles. Loop. 600’ elevation gain. Best November to June. Moderate.

Santa Ana Mountains Hikes

33. Black Star Canyon and Falls. 5.5 to 10.2 miles round-trip. Out and back. 300’ to 1200’ elevation gain. Best November to June. Moderate to very strenuous. Hiked 3/29/2013.

34. Maple Springs Road. 4.6 miles (with up to 12 miles added if you wish to ascend to Modjeska Peak). Out and back. 600’ elevation gain. Best November to June. Easy, unless you brave the climb to the peak.

 48. Modjeska Grade Road and Santiago Truck Trail. 7.8 miles. Out and back. 1300’ elevation gain. Best December to May. Moderately strenuous.
